Gardeners Charcott 2 v 1 Pembury Sunday

This week was really encouraging and we played some really good football going forward but what was more pleasing was when we didn’t have the ball that we worked hard to defend as a team. I think Gardeners thought they were going to be in for an easy game and even though we had only 11 players as a team our effort was superb. Gardeners had most of the possession in the first 20 minutes but without actually creating anything of note.

Then we seemed to work out we could get the ball down and try to play a bit of football on a pitch in really good condition considering how hard the ground has been. The back four of Ollie, Gunny, Hunter and Leeds worked tirelessly as a unit and threw their bodies in the way of anything with Macca only having to save shots from long range. Gardeners then got some luck when Ashmore was allowed to turn on the edge of the area and his shot cannoned off one or two players which didn’t give Macca any chance.

This didn’t get us down and we still tried to play football even from the back and 5 minutes later we were level with a lovely move down the left involving me, Danny, Stu, Danny again who crossed for Al to tap in at the far post. Really opportunities were rare for both sides, the only thing of note was JR’s second appearance of the season and he spun in the area to create room for the shot which was blocked.

At half time we said we needed to keep the effort going and that there was definitely something in this game for us. The second half started evenly with the both defences coming out on top.

Gunny got a knock with 20 minutes left and tried to carry on up front but unfortunately had to limp off meaning we were down to 10. We still tried to play when we could and soon Danny was onto a long ball with the keeper rushing out but his lob just went over. If that had gone in things would have been really interesting in the last 15 minutes.

Gardeners then started to make the extra man count but we stood firm with some forays into their half mainly from Woody who just seems to drift past people at the moment. Such is our luck this season with 5 minutes left a throw which Hunter thought was ours was given the other way and he gave the opposition the ball who duly threw it into the area where he would normally be and admittedly we could have cleared it but the cross was somehow scrambled in at the far post.

Obviously disappointed with the result as we definitely deserved something from the game but we showed we can battle and play good football so the wins should start coming soon.
