Pembury Reserves 0 - 4 AFC Valour

This Saturday was somewhat of a baptism of fire for myself. As stand in manager I didn't anticipate exactly how much work needed to be done on match day and as a result this week was a bit of a shambles, and if it was for the help of Brownie during the week we might have struggled to put 11 players out.

That being said we managed to field a strong looking side that if we can keep a number of them playing it wont be long before we start to pick things up and look like a decent outfit.

The first half was very difficult as we struggled to make easy options and as a result we gave the ball away cheaply, we were working hard at the back but after about 15 minutes we conceded a soft goal and shortly afterwards were 2 down. AFC valour were playing with a lot more freedom and made it 3-0 by about 35 minutes and if it wasn't for a couple of really good stops by James it might have been a lot worse.

We managed to see it out to half time and with James having to go play for the firsts we put Michael Drury in goal and Matt Edwards came in to the centre of the park, pushing Rob Hendley up front.

The second half was a lot better, with the addition of Matts height it meant that we were able to play more direct and this caused a number of problems for Valour, had they not been 3 up it might have caused more panic but with the healthy lead they were able to deal with the pressure with relative ease.

As the game went on we started to tire and as a result they were able to beat the offside trap to make it 4. We nearly nicked a consolation goal towards the end with are best move of the day, but the Matt Edwards had to take the shot on the bounce and the ball went just over the bar.

I can not fault the effort put in as every player put in a real shift and individually couldn't be faulted, as a team though we didn't show enough understanding and there was not enough chat needed in order to break down a well organised outfit like AFC Valour.

With a consistent set of players playing week in week out we will be fine in this division but we need to get some points on the board so we can push on from there.

Next week we have a chance to put things right as we entertain Hawkenbury 3rds at home so with better organisation from myself and the knowledge of what needs to be done on match day I expect a change in fortunes.
