Pembury Reserves 0 v 5 Three Suttons
This Saturday we entertained Three Suttons in the Kent Cup and with a sleepless night because of the prospect of possibly having to play in goal and the thought of 10 men I turned up in not the greatest of moods.
Fortunately the ever helpful Brownie managed to loan me Nick Edwards and Sam Nagle, and Christian White became a hero of mine by volunteering to go in goal.
So with a strong 12 man squad with Rob Hendley coming after work to make it 13, I suddenly felt cheery enough to muster up the teamtalk of "Kent Cup, enjoy yourself and if we lose at least we avoid a crappy away trip to somewhere the other side of Maidstone".
The first half was not too bad at all, Christian was proving to be a very able goalkeeper in particular making one fantastic save in the opening 10 minutes and as a team we looked comfortable and calm on the ball and playing some decent stuff.
Unfortunately after about 20 minutes we found ourselves 1 down after a good finish, we didn't let our heads drop despite the disappointment and started again trying to play football the right way.
Once again though three Suttons finished well to make it 2-0 and the familiar story of playing well but having nothing to show for it at half time was as tedious as always.
We spoke at halftime though and everyone was still very much up for the game and wanting to play so with that in mind I decided to give it 10 minutes and bring myself and Lee off for Sam and Rob.
It wasn't long into the second half before they made it 3 when we failed to close down a shot from the edge of the area and that goal managed to kill a number of our players enthusiasm for the game.
With the game pretty much rapped up for Three Suttons it gave them the confidence to commit men forward and we ended up defending for a large proportion of the second half, I personally believe though that this was our own doing, a number of people stopped working for each other and it was because of this that we finished the game on the wrong end of a 5-0 score line
The difference between getting beaten 3-0 and 5-0 I think is down to mental strength, when you go 3 down something in your mind should make you really try and step up a gear to avoid getting heavily beaten, this being said I did give the team the "No pressure" teamtalk so maybe I cant complain to much.
I certainly didn't cry myself to sleep by going out of the Kent cup but it was disappointing that some of us rolled over the way we did, we really need to get a win under are belt because losing is becoming all too familiar and habits are difficult to stop.
