Pembury 1 v 4 Swale
A new start to the season brought fresh hope, yet reality seems all too familiar. Pembury with a strong squad entertained Swale Utd in the opening game of the 2009/10 season and although the end result was worse than the performance there are still plenty of things to work on to avoid another bottom two finish.
The season has already thrown up its first interesting moment - with both teams being led out to the pitch by the referee and then are presented to the crowd (14 blokes and 3 dogs) before handshakes all round - national anthems will be sing as well soon!
Although Pembury started brightly they could not capitalise on there possession and neat passing and once the opposition were award a very suspect penalty there seemed no way back. Steve Lindsey was judges to have pushed a Swale midfielder during a throw on, although there were no appeals and shock from both sides when it was awarded as a team we have to realise things like this happen and we have to deal with it. The resulting spot kick was emphatically smashed into the roof of the net. The Pembury heads visibly dropped after this and when after the kick off Pembury gave the ball away, they failed to pick up a runner from deep who waltzed through and side footed home, far too easy fro any standard of football.
Pembury were given a lifeline when the referee made his second howler and this time awarded Pembury a penalty for the same offence as before, this time Chris Mearing sent the goal keeper the wrong way. This lifted Pembury momentarily and they started to move the ball well again, unfortunately this didn’t last long and when the Swale right midfielder who had caused problems all game with his pace wasn’t stopped higher up the pitch he ran through and finished well. So half time and 3-1 down, one change was made with Liam Gent returning to the left of midfield and Harry Hodge who made his 1st team debut coming off after working hard for 45 minutes.
The second half didn’t get much better and once Pembury started chasing the game gaps appeared all over the pitch, but chances were limited although Liam Gent and Mark Wyles had half chances from the edge of the box. Things got worse for Pembury and the referee when a fourth goal was scored by Swale, although the opposition forward seemed to be in an off side position seen by almost everyone inc the referees assessor and the linesman who raised his flag - the referee gave the goal anyway without consulting him. Apparently there is a big “respect the officials” campaign which is being included, maybe here we should start a respect ‘Pembury’ campaign - might get a decision every now and again! It’s frustrating that we have t supply a linesman and Phil kindly agrees to do this every week and anyone who knows him would realised he wouldn’t cheat, yet they are not given the same amount of respect as a referee yet they don’t get paid to do this!
So final score was 4-1 and a shocking start to the season there were some positives and for the first 20 minutes we looked like a very good side but we have to work a lot harder than we did individually and as a team both with and without the ball! Now is the time to show what all the hard work was in pre season, we are a much fitter team than last year yet we gave up easily this week! I expect much more from this team, if we lose having tried our hardest fair enough but there were too many selfish performances this week!
A little bit off subject, but you have to feel sorry for newly promoted Hawkenbury’s manger although his side got a respectable 2-2 draw in their opening game of the Kent County league he still takes pleasure in seeing us lose - this was his silver lining!, I’d like to congratulate Hawkenbury on there rise through the leagues and we will enjoy the 2 upcoming games this season, I just hope their players don’t follow his example and show a lack of imagination and class that sadly he seems to be missing. Sadly our applause and congratulations to them after the cup final was not appreciated and you feel that his attitude is the same as the level of football we play(amateur).
