Pembury 1 v 5 Borden Village
On Bank Holiday Monday Pembury travelled to Sittingbourne to play Borden Village, what looked like at the beginning of the week to be a decent squad in both ability and size was reduced when 2 players failed to show up. We still had a fairly good sized squad but this would have given us the chance to rest a couple of players who were carrying knocks.
We started the game brightly in terms of getting the ball down and moving it but weren’t committed enough while defending as a team, but once James Donaldson and Yun put in a couple of meaty challenges on players twice their size the rest of the team started to battle hard.
The game was fairly even with chances being limited, but we always knew the opposition’s height would be a concern with some sizeable players in their side this came true when they scored from a corner midway into the half. We kept playing some decent football on a bogy pitch but concentration was and is our biggest downfall, every time the game stopped for some reason we switched off and when the play got going we were immediately under pressure this happened twice before half time in quick succession and we found ourselves 3-0 down at the break.
Saying this we were dangerous on the break and had plenty of possession (which the ref commented on) but couldn’t finish our chances. After half time we came out he box flying and scored soon after from Martin Kubik, who also had another chance to pull a goal back soon afterwards due to great play by Wyles. Woody also had a chance to get a goal after a great run. Chances were falling to us and a comeback was on the cards if we could be a bit more confident in front of goal. But unfortunately an injury to one of there players resulted in a short stop in play and once again our concentration went and they scored straight from the restart. They were to add another goal to make it 5-1.
The game was not a 5-1 defeat but if we do not have concentration for 90 minutes then we will continue to concede sloppy goals. Our football at times was brilliant which was commented on by the ref, the away team and their supporters but means nothing if we don’t defend as a team properly.
