Pembury 2 v 3 Borden Village

Saturday we entertained Borden Village in the league and after last weeks first half performance we needed a strong squad who were committed to try and turn things around, unfortunately with only 10 players available from the 44 signed on (Yes shocking as is my phone bill after trying to get in contact with them all!) we had to take one from the reserves so we took the always reliable Yaccine. To give us a massive squad of the bare 11! It’s not worth me moaning about it here anymore as it’s not made any difference in the past but if anyone knows of anyone willing to play please let me know!

We decided to go with a change of tactics to try and freshen things up and gain that elusive first win. We started the game brightly and although defensively we were a bit unsure in terms of positioning going forward we looked good, we moved the ball well and created an early chance when Chris Mearing shot wide, this pattern of play continued and it wasn’t long before we took the lead when good lead up play resulted in Mearing finishing sharply at the near post. We continued to work hard and play football when we had the chance but as we were still getting used to the new position Borden started to gain control of the game and although they didn’t seriously trouble Hymers in goal up until now he still had to be on his toes. Unfortunately a corner kick was headed in after some slack defending.

Half time and with the score 1-1 we felt we might have too much for them if we could keep our work rate up and play to our strengths. Unfortunately soon after half time we conceded again and it was uphill from here, although Borden had a couple of chances which resulted in Dave making some fine saves we then took the game to them. Which resulted in us getting an equaliser – I’m told it was a well worked goal and finished well by Mearing but I didn’t see it as I was stuck in a bush fetching a ball – while Dan was giving out tactics to the players, maybe a role reversal is needed!

The players did there best to see out the game but the fresh legs of the Borden team produced a fortunate winner after a long shot took a deflection off Lindo and gave Dave no chance. We still had time to have 3 more chances 2 of which fell to our goalkeeper – who said we aren’t adventurous! One right foot volley in particular was flying in until it hit the defender on the line in the chest and almost took him and the ball in! With about 30 seconds left Martin had a great chance to finish from close range but the ball flew over the bar.

Unfortunately this wasn’t to be our day but if we can continue to perform like this it wont be long before we actually win a game. Great effort lads and apart from the feeling of defeat we actually looked like we enjoyed being out there and played with a high tempo and good attacking play – bring on next week!

Just a quick note of disappointment I asked Lewis to ask any of the reserves if they would come and be on the bench for us in the case of injury to one of our players as we didn’t have any subs and although I wouldn’t have put them on unless absolutely needed as they had already played a game not one would and in fact they all just snuck off this is similar to last week when we needed to take someone and not one would come along to our game! I can’t force anyone to do anything but the amount of effort myself and Lewis put in every week for you guys a bit of co-operation would be helpful, sadly enough I’m old enough to remember people desperate to play for the first team- how times have changed.
