Pembury 1 v 1 Hawkenbury
Tonight in our first evening fixture of the campaign we hosted local rivals Hawkenbury and for once we had a squad of 15, seems weird people can make Tuesday nights but not Saturdays! With some people not arriving until late, myself included Les picked a team of those that were there the earliest and started with Rich in goal, Strawbs right back, Rob Rhee and Tom Bowyer in the middle and Gunny left back. Yun started on the right, with Steve L and Pat B in the middle with Martin Kubik out wide on the left with Yacc and Les as our front two.
The game started with both teams a little nervy and this was probably due to them having little time to warm up, as the half progressed Hawkenbury looked more dangerous going forward but with Pembury looking better in possession although still not great. Strawbs was looking solid against the quick left winger while Rob Rhee and Bowyer were winning everything at the back. Mid way through the first half and a lapse of concentration from a corner resulted in Hawkenbury snatching a sloppy goal.
We were disappointed but could sense the game wasn’t over with and didn’t crumble; Pat was looking good on the ball and was linking up well with Yun and Les. We were working the ball ok across the pitch but our final ball was not quite good enough to trouble the Hawkenbury goalie, with the pace and work rate of the Hawkenbury front line they were always a threat and when they did manage to string passes together they looked like causing us trouble but the back four and Steve L held firm.
Half time we spoke about being more dominant in possession and testing their defence, we were looking fairly solid at the back being led by Gunny and the midfield needed to start winning the battle a little bit more and imposing themselves. We made 2 changes Woody coming on for Strawbs and Galey coming on for Yun. Soon after half time we had to make our third sub with Les coming off being replaced by Wylesy.
Second half and we were getting a lot more of the ball and attacking with a bit more pace, again we looked solid at the back Hawkenbury broke through once after a mistake at right back but Rich made another good stop to deny them. We started pushing more and got though a couple of times with Yacc and Wyles having a couple of half chances but could not beat the Hawkenbury goalkeeper. Woody then had the chance of the match when the ball fell to him on the 6 yard line and as he went to side foot into the net the ball stopped still and the goalkeeper managed to collect, how he missed I still don’t know!
We had the majority of possession but could not seem to find a way past their goalkeeper but kept working the ball well trying to find holes but the Hawkenbury defence were resisting well, Woody then got caught in possession in our box and this resulted in their forward hitting the outside of the post. We continued to push but was always wary of being caught on the break, but the defence were up to the task we had a couple of half chances again but nothing was getting past the Hawkenbury goalkeeper.
With time running out we got ourselves a corner and sent almost everyone forward, Woody knocked the ball into the front post and Galey headed home for the equaliser in the last minute. A decent result against a good side should give us a bit f confidence, a draw was probably a fair result with them edging the first half and us having the second half.
