It is easy to go over the top after a seven nil victory as often the result is as much to do with the weakness of the opposition rather than the quality of your own performance. The result on Sunday though was due to our performance as Dormansland were not a bad side and far stronger than the team we played earlier in the season.
In the first half we played some very good football particularly down our right where Lindo and Peter were combining well and getting good delivery in to the box. The first goal on twenty minutes came from such a move when following good interplay Alun Evans was played in to square for Dave Burren to side foot home. Defensively we were looking very solid and coping well with two quite lively forwards.
Although the midfield of Dormansland was strong our midfield was closing them down quickly and as a result restricted the quality of the supply that they were able to deliver. We increased our lead on thirty six minutes when Dave Burren was played in. He had several attempts to score blocked by their keeper before the ball eventually fell to Les who side footed into the roof of the net - he was actually lucky that he was so close to the line as if he had been any further out the ball may have gone over the bar!
The score remained that way until half time - where all that we could ask was for more of the same. We are a good side when we pass the ball around teams particularly those who fly in, as was the case on Sunday.
We struggled for a while to get going with any real fluency at the start of the second half although we did still manage to create an opportunity for Les to blast over - a repeat of his goal in the first half only this time he was a further out! Nevertheless three goals in three minutes on the hour put the result beyond doubt.
The first came from a Wardy free kick which Manse claimed he got a touch on to glance past the keeper, it looked like he missed it from where I was standing but I’ll take his word for it unless Wardy comes up with sufficient cash. The second a minute later came courtesy of a firm Evans header from a teasing Bukovec cross up the slope.
Harps then came to the party, replacing Genty on the left after the third goal, he received the ball out wide and after three touches the ball was being picked out of the net following a bullet of a shot that left everyone astounded - their defence in particular who were heard to comment ‘and he’s their sub’!
The sixth followed with seven minutes remaining Alun Evans played Harps in on a one on one with their keeper and he squared to Dave Burren to side foot home for his second of the game. There was still time for Woody to get in on the act when he finished well in the final minute for the seventh.
Good preparation for next week when we face a massive game at Simla. If we pass the ball around though as we did today then we can go into the game with a lot of confidence.
