For the second week running the team delivered. There was some discussion in the pub afterwards as to whether we had played better this week than last. I tend to think that overall, given the opposition and across the whole ninety minutes, we played marginally better last week, that said for the first twenty and the last twenty minutes yesterday we played some outstanding football and had our finishing been better then we could have had eight or nine. Without wishing to get carried away with ourselves our confidence is back and we are currently looking very good. If we maintain this form combined the same effort and desire then we will do well again.
For the first twenty we passed the ball very well. Short sharp passing all around the pitch meant that a very determined Artois side were chasing shadows. It was no surprise therefore when we took the lead. Millsy latching on to a through ball and lobbing a square pass over the keeper on to the on rushing Mark Lester who side footed home. After that we allowed Artois slightly back in to the game but were always in control with the defence again very solid. Despite this we were always mindful that one mistake or a converted half chance would bring them level and an Artois side with something to work for is always a difficult proposition.
It was therefore with relief when the second goal came on fifty five minutes. Barry Leete playing in Alun Evans who unselfishly squared to Danny MacGahan to finish. This effectively killed the game off but it wasn’t until the final twenty minutes that we hit the form of earlier. The introduction of Harps and Peter Bukovec, for the injured Millsy and a tired Mark Lester, who again had run himself in to the ground, was the catalyst for some lovely football. Harps and Peter struck up an instant understanding and it was following good inter-play between the two that Harps fired home the third on eighty minutes. Numerous chances followed thereafter however we didn’t find the net again until the final minute when Danny again showed his finishing skills by firing home from inside the box.
So another pleasing week and a convincing three points against the team that started the day unbeaten at the top of the table. We now have two weeks of cup action starting with a very tough game at Simla on Sunday in the Kent Cup.
