A new look Reserve side containing 7 players under the age of 18 were given a tough opening fixture against one of the division’s strongest sides. The match also witnessed the return (from retirement) of co-manager Andy Whittaker.
The opening exchanges were very even, with us retaining good possession and Rusthall looking to get the ball forward to their dangerous strike force as early as possible. We went behind inside the first 10 minutes when a midfield runner was not tracked and we were caught ball watching when the ball was played into our box. To our credit we didn’t let this affect us too much and we continued to get the ball down and pass our way around the opposition. A second lapse in concentration saw their centre back easily win the ball, whilst we waited for it to arrive. A decent through ball saw their centre forward muscle Luke out of the way, before finishing smartly. Nat Twiggs, making a very impressive debut, had a couple of shots from long range, before Lewis then missed a gilt edged chance to pull one back, when missing with a close range header. Their centre forward then repeated the trick at the other end.
We started the second half really well and Rusthall were beginning to look tired, as we continued to use the ball well. The only thing we were missing was a goal. Unfortunately during one of Rusthall’s rare forays forward, a mistake from the otherwise excellent Nick Edwards, presented their centre forward with a tap in to make it 3 - 0. To our credit we continued to press forward and continued to have the better of the play. A long ball from Andy was well met by Mark Wyles and good anticipation from Matt allowed him to get in behind the full back. An excellent cross was met by Yacine, who marked his senior debut with a fine header. Unfortunately we weren’t to create any further chances.
Whilst not the result we were after, a very pleasing performance which should bode well for the season ahead.
