After an indifferent start to the season, Pembury went into today's game following a strong finish to last week's cup tie. So far they have played some attractive football, but have struggled to convert possession into goals when its mattered most. Today's opponents were Biggin Hill, a side not to be underestimated.
Biggin Hill started the stronger, as Pembury struggled to find feet with their usual short passing game. Most of the first half chances fell to the away side, however, the Pembury defence held strong with a vocal Lanaway back between the sticks.
Pembury came closest to breaking the deadlock when Taylor struck the post with a swerving 25 yard thunder bolt. The first half ended 0-0, still all to play for!
The home side had a great start to the second half, with an amazing strike from Alun Evans on the edge of the box giving the keeper no chance. This should of kick-started Pembury's season, but poor defending from a free-kick brought the visitors level. Not long after equalising, Taylor made a clumsy challenge, giving Biggin Hill a penalty which they converted with ease to take the lead.
To make matters worse Biggin Hill struck once again making it 1-3, and with a disallowed headed goal for Gale the writing was on the wall for a second league defeat of the season for Pembury. In the second half the manager made three timely substitutions, and with 10 minutes to go Alun Evans hit back putting the home side within reach of the visitors. Pembury continued to push forward, and minutes from the end they were rewarded with a header from Brooker bringing them level. Well deserved comeback, showing character they had previously lacked.
Two points from a possible nine is not the best the start, however, they have shown signs of being a good footballing side. If they can continue playing their attractive short passing game combined with more effort it will eventually click, and the flood gates will open.
The squad is extremely talented with competition for places, however, it's not yet fulfilling it's true potential. Expect changes to the starting eleven next week.
