Second placed Paddock Wood visited Woodside looking to close the gap at the top of the table, and with a number of games in hand for Pembury this match was of massive importance to both sides.
In sticky conditions both sides started comfortably, with Pembury slightly edging the greater possession. After 20 minutes of play Pembury's short two-touch passing paid off and after some good link play in midfield, Leete put Marshall through one-on-one with the keeper. The experienced forward did not disappoint, and edged the home side in front. Pembury's nerves had now settled as they continued to play some good football. Two further goals followed in similar fashion to the first, with an assist from Evans to put Brooker in & some great work out wide by Ells helped to open Evans' account for the day.
To cap a very productive first half for Pembury, Leete scored a wonder goal from just inside the opposition's half, striking a half volley after spotting the goalie out of position. Pembury 4, Paddock Wood 0, the writing was on the wall or so it looked...
The away side was clearly rattled, which showed in the half term interval when they started fighting amongst themselves. However, this altercation appeared to work as a catalyst for the away team, as the start of the second half saw two completely different sides! Although Pembury were heavily briefed on the need for concentration, it did not stop Paddock Wood scoring two goals within quick succession in the first 10 minutes of the half. It was fair to say that all ten outfield players had switched off, passing their defensive responsibilities on to next player. This will only ever result in one thing, MacMillan picking the ball out of the net, and it did!!
The home side was on edge, and with Gale picking up a knock it was down to the ageless Waterman to come off the bench & steady the ship. It was only a matter of time before the away side would tire, and leave themselves open at the back.
A number of outstanding finger tip saves from Macmillan kept the visitors at bay, keeping the score at 4-2. These saves seemed to inspire Pembury as Brooker & Evans went on to grab their second goals of the game. Not to be out-done Leete matched his first half goal with a mazy run through the Paddock Wood midfield & defence to grab his second of the day.
Lots of positives to take from this game, with good partnerships forming all round the team. A strong Pembury performance, although better opposition would have punished Pembury further at the beginning of the second half. This is a little concerning as they will not always have a four goal cushion!! Needless to say three points & a plus five goal average is not a bad days work.
