Following on from the victory in midweek, I was keen for us to win again against Saga. A team who have improved as the season has progressed, but are still along way from threatening the upper regions of the league.
We were struggling for fit subs, but the 11 we did field were strong.
Our football in the first 15 mins was neat and tidy and we were pressing them well on the bumpy woodside pitch, which often meant they surrendered possession. During this period we took the lead when Ellsy drove the ball home from 12 yards. 3 points definitely for the taking, or so I thought.
We then descended into a argumentative team, and any focus we had soon evaporated. Before half time we were 2-1 down, as firstly we found ourselves 3 on 2 at the back and their top marksmen finished well. This came about after I tried to reorganise the back four, who were often marking 2 men, but Hymers decided he new best. He and Sargy then spent the next 10 mins slating each other. This was enough time for Sargy to under hit a pass to Hymers, which they intercepted and scored again.
We spoke at half time about the need to regain the tempo we started with, but this failed to materialize, and although Hymers equalized, we did not show the quality to take all the points.
For myself it is so frustrating to watch, as I know the team is capable, but something is missing. Whether its desire, commitment, motivation, I don’t know. But maybe someone else could put their finger on it, and take the team forward.
