Today saw us break with the traditional 4-4-2 we have been playing of late and go more adventurous with a 4-3-3 formation, as we are at the stage of the season where 3 points are paramount if we are to keep our slim promotion hopes alive.
Total credit goes out to the squad today who put in, what I believe was our most complete performance over 90mins we have had this season, and a million miles better than last time out against Putlands.
We started well and limited them to half chances, as well as creating some openings ourselves. However it did look like it would take something special to break the deadlock, and as much as it pains me to write this, it came via the boot of Hymers as he turned and hit a dipping volley from about 25 yards. He claimed that the Rooney like ginger beard he was sporting, had something to do with this.
This is how it remained at half time.
The 2nd half was a similar affair, but if anything we exerted more control on proceedings, and thought we had made the game safe when Woody made it 2-0 with about 10 mins to go. Wrong. Aus decided to liven things up as a harmless ball was delivered into our box. He decided to call keepers, to lure Ashley off his line, and then lob him. 2-1 and a nervy last minute, which passed with no more scares and a excellent 3 points gained.
Equally as impressive was the manner in which we went about our business. We competed as a unit, and worked tirelessly for one another, something that has not always been there.
Ashley was brave and assured in goal, and is proving an excellent acquisition. The back four of Rob, Lee, Nick and Browny are looking solid, the midfield is full of energy and creation, and with the pace of Ellsy, James and Ben when he came on, we will always pose a threat. Hymers is Hymers and when his head is in the right place he also is great for the team.
All in all a great win, but hopefully not a one off.
